How can I alkalise?

Acidosis or in an acidic pH level in your body occurs from following an acid-forming diet, emotional stress, toxic overload, immune reactions, and when our cells don’t get enough oxygen and other nutrients.

Our bodies are incredibly intelligent and have the ability to try to neutralise or compensate for the acidic pH by using alkaline minerals. If your diet does not contain enough minerals to compensate, then a build up of acids in the cells will occur.

Acidosis severely curtails the body’s ability to absorb minerals and nutrients, it decreases the body’s ability to repair damaged cells and also the body’s ability to detoxify and eliminate heavy metals in the body.

Unfortunately it will also force the body to take minerals from the body, particularly the joints and bones which can lead to all sorts of problems in later life.

The body has to try to maintain a pH of 6.37 a point or two either side of that would mean death.

So let’s take each one of the areas in the first paragraph where we can helpour body become more alkaline.

Diet can be the easiest or hardest thing to change for people but foods like lemons, watermelon, cayenne pepper (I know who’d have thought) figs, papaya , parsley, lemon, limes, kiwifruit, pineapple, sweet potato, onions mangos and melons are all extremely good alkalising foods although the sugars from fruits if taken in too large a quantity can be acid forming as well but not to the same level as refined sugars.

And it’s not just foods that can alkalise. Drinks like Naturespharm’s green tea can also help you to alkalise as well as being really tasty and not making it feel like you are on a diet.

And it’s not a case of you having to stick to all the above foods but if you want to get your body more alkaline heading towards the Christmas season then these foods are certainly the way to go and I would recommend staying on
green tea as your beverage choice and make coffee (which is acid forming) an occasional treat rather than the other way around.

As well as increasing your alkalinity, you can also decrease the amount of acid you consume.

Coffee, fizzy drinks, cigarettes, white flour, salt, chocolate, red meat, beers and spirits are all acid forming foods.

You’ll have noticed that a lot of the acid-forming foods are also addictive foods and that is one of the most interesting observations I have made personally this year that the more I alkalise, the less I gave craved acid-forming foods and drinks.

Apples, apricots, alfalfa sprouts, bananas, berries, bell peppers, celery, garlic, pumpkin bamboo shoots, green beans beets, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, ginger, kale parsnip potatoes turnips and apple cider vinegar are all moderately alkaline forming foods. As you can see there is plenty to choose from and no reason to go hungry if you include any or all in your diet.

As I said, nobody is expecting you to be a saint but consider dropping some of the acid-forming food, increase the alkalising foods and certainly look to drink more alkalising drinks like green tea and water.
